News 12 was on hand Friday to take a look at the future site of the Universal Hip Hop Museum that is set to be built in the borough.
The building, which will honor the first 40 years of hip-hop and into the future, will be built off the Major Deegan at 149th Street and the Harlem River.
Some original emcees were on hand Friday, including Kurtis Blow, the chairman of the museum’s Board of Trustees and Coke La Rock, who is credited as being the first rapper in hip-hop history.
“I was hip-hop before it even had a name,” said La Rock. “They just classified it as a beat.”
The current plot of land is set to be transformed into a 50,000-square-foot museum of hip-hop history. It will include plenty of technology and studios where kids can kick a verse. Organizers hope it will be completed by 2023.
