New technology is coming to the borough to help commuters know how close the next bus is.
Countdown clocks will be installed at four different locations in the Bronx. The clocks will inform riders how long they will have to wait for their bus.
Councilman Ritchie Torres secured $80,000 in the city budget for the clocks.
The clocks will be located at Valentine Avenue and East Fordham Road, Grand Concourse and Tremont Avenue, Third Avenue and 180th Street and Third Avenue and Tremont Avenue.
Torres says the digital clocks use the same GPS tracking system as the MTA's Bus Time feature, which is only available online. It has been criticized for not accommodating riders who are not tech savvy or do not own smartphones.
Torres says this is the first step toward reversing the bus ridership decline marked by slow, unreliable service. The councilman says he is looking to expand the countdown clocks across the city.
The Bus Turnaround Coalition, which grades bus service each year, has been pushing for countdown clocks, better bus lane enforcement and green light signal priority for buses.
The clocks are also equipped with an audio feature for the visually impaired.
