An oncology nurse is raising money for a new cancer center at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
Justin Baney has modified his truck to take it off road and participate in what's called "Ultra4 Racing." It's an intense racing competition in the California desert in which Baney will be dodging boulders and trying not to drive into a ditch.
Baney is a nurse in the cancer unit at Good Samaritan. Co-workers and friends are pledging money for every mile he finishes. The money will go toward the new unit.
Baney will have a co-pilot who will monitor the dash-mounted GPS to navigate the rough terrain.
Baney is raising money for patients like Christine Molinari, who has cancer and is also a nurse at Good Samaritan. She says the new cancer center will be able to accommodate more patients.
Baney says the rough ride will be well-worth helping those battling cancer. He hopes to raise $5,000 for the new center, which is set to open this year.
