3-alarm fire destroys two-story building in Cypress Hills
A three-alarm fire tore through a building in Cypress Hills Sunday afternoon.
Officials say the call came in around 12:30 for a fire in private dwelling, two-story building located at 275 Essex St. between Atlantic and Liberty Avenues.
Fire officials say 40 units with 140 firefighters were called in to fight the flames. They arrived to find significant flames and damage in the basement, first and second floors of the two-story building.
No one was inside at the time. But officials say heavy clutter inside and around the home complicated efforts to fight the flames. They could only fight the fire from the outside.
There were also concerns that the fire would spread, but it stayed contained to the one building.
Despite a partial roof and second-floor collapse, officials say no injuries were reported.
The entire building will have to be torn down.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
