Activists demand meeting with DA after man shot by ex-NYPD officer
Activists and an attorney who represent a man who was shot in the face by a former NYPD sergeant are demanding a meeting with the Brooklyn district attorney.
Thavone Santana was shot by then NYPD Sgt. Ritchard Blake more than seven months ago.
Blake, who was fired from the department last Friday, pleaded not guilty on charges of tampering with evidence.
Activists say those charges don't go far enough, criticizing the grand jury for not charging him with assault or attempted murder.
Surveillance video captured Blake opening fire after a tense standoff with Santana, then placing and later retrieving an object that turned out to be a knife next to Santana's body.
A law enforcement source tells News 12 a charge of attempted murder could only be brought if the grand jury decided the shooting was unjustified.
Santana has since had his mouth reconstructed with wire and his diet has been limited to puree and food through a tube.
Activists and Santana's family say they have secured a meeting with District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, but a date has not been set yet. News 12 was told the meeting will be before Blake is due back in court on April 17.
