Denim Day supporters walked from the Grand Concourse to Jerome Avenue for a fifth consecutive year as a show of unity against sexual assault.

The day takes its name from an Italian Supreme Court decision in the 1990s that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans.

It was a high-profile case of victim blaming that prompted international outrage.

Friday’s march included 12 different community organizations. Anyone wishing to support the cause can wear denim on April 24.

The Italian Supreme Court actually reversed its stance on the issue when deciding another sexual assault case involving a victim in jeans in 2005.
