Two people from the Bronx are accused of trying to swindle a couple who already lost tens of thousands to scammers.
Nassau County police say the couple in their 70s received a phone call Wednesday from a man claiming to be a lawyer saying their son was in jail in Florida and needed $29,000 in bail money. They couple dished out that money to the scammers, who police say went to the couple's home to collect.
On Thursday, the couple got another phone call saying the son owed an addition $12,000 in medical bills. The female victim says she then called her son, who told her to call police.
Officers arrested Lissette Rodriguez and Rigo Jose Batista Dominguez when the two showed up to collect the money. Police say they haven't really seen scammers go to their victim's home.
Police say there still may be more than one person involved in the scam. Rodriguez and Dominguez are currently charged with attempted grand larceny, but police say it's possible they were also involved in the $29,000 theft.
