City officials say they are hoping to drastically improve one section of Mott Haven along Willis Avenue has been dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The intersection at 138th Street is considered to be a top priority in the city's Vision Zero program, which is aimed at improving street safety. Just a few months ago, police say a pedestrian at a crosswalk was hit and killed when a city sanitation vehicle tried to make a left turn.

Those who live in the area say the fatal incident was not the first of its kind.

The Department of Transportation is now proposing a slew of changes to Willis Avenue between East 135th and East 147th streets. Some of the improvements include signal phasing enhancements, left turn restrictions, protected bike lanes and pedestrian islands.

The changes would result in a loss of over a dozen parking spaces, but city officials say the upgrades to neighboring streets will help offset that loss.
