Police: Bronx man raped girl over 4-year span at wife’s day care center

A Bronx man repeatedly raped a young girl at a day care his wife operates over the course of four years, authorities say.
Alberto Hernandez, 60, is facing multiple charges of rape and sexual abuse.
No one answered the front door of the Maria Cortez Day Care – a home child care run out of a first-floor apartment at 2834 Heath Ave. According to records, Maria Cortez Day Care is fully licensed and has been around for 20 years. The center cares for children from infants up to 12 years old.
The alleged victim's school counselor alerted authorities after the girl told them she had been sexually abused by Hernandez for four years starting when the girl was just 6 years old. The alleged victim is now 13.
The city Health Department, which oversees child care sites, told News 12 The Bronx that the day care had no listed violations.
In a statement regarding the incident, a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Health says, "The Health Department's top priority is the health and safety of New York's children and we're saddened and disturbed to learn of these allegations."
The state's Office of Children and Family Care is taking steps to suspend the day care's license during the ongoing investigation.
Detectives are now looking into the day care to see if there are more possible victims.
