Judge grants order of protection against mom accused of slashing kids' throats

A judge granted an order of protection for the children whose mother allegedly slashed their throats with a box cutter.
Shanice Martin, 24, was arraigned at Bronx Criminal Court Thursday. The Melrose mother will also undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Police say Martin used a box cutter to slash the throats of her 6-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter, before turning herself in. The attacks happened Saturday near Washington and Brooke avenues.
Family members say the slashings were out of character for Martin, adding that she has spent time in and out of shelters. They say they wish she had turned to them for help.
Officials say Martin was arraigned today because she was hospitalized over the weekend.
The two children are both recovering. Officials tell News 12 that the young girl has resumed eating.
Martin will be back in court June 4.
