State's top criminologist dismisses false testimony accusations that sent 2 men to prison for 30 years
The state's top criminologist, Dr. Henry Lee, held a news conference Monday attempting to clear his name after the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled he gave false testimony during the murder trial of 65-year-old Everett Carr in 1985 in New Milford.
Shawn Henning and Ralph Birch have maintained their innocence claiming their conviction was the result of false testimony from Dr. Lee about bloody towels at the crime scene.
Lee explained to the media during a presentation in West Haven the process he went through to come to his conclusions in the case, and says he carried out the proper tests.
"If you say I did not conduct any tests, that's totally wrong," said Lee. "I spent a lot of time at the crime scene and a lot of time in the laboratory."
He says his heart goes out to all those involved, and says since he's retired now, he will not continue to investigate the case.
Dr. Lee says in his 58 years of forensic science he has investigated 8,000 cases and was accurate in all his findings.
The state Supreme Court's decision has ordered a new trial for two men who have served more than 30 years in prison. The state Department of Corrections says Henning was released on supervised parole last year.
