National Weather Service investigators have determined that a small tornado touched down in a southern New Jersey town, less than a week after another tornado hit the same community.
The determination came Friday, one day after a severe storm toppled trees and caused other damage in Mount Laurel Township.
The investigators determined the EF-1 tornado touched down Thursday night in an open area on the Ramblewood Golf Course in Mount Laurel. It then traveled about 1.3 miles on a discontinuous path, uprooting trees and damaging a few apartment buildings.
Mount Laurel residents tell News 12 New Jersey that they sought shelter when the weather started to turn bad.
“I went into my laundry room, which is the center room in my house,” says Mount Laurel resident Barbara Seltenberg. “I just heard this like ripping wind, I mean it was howling, and I heard things crack…I looked outside and noticed it was a mess. It looked like a war zone.”
The tornado's top wind speeds were about 90 mph. It's the fifth confirmed tornado in New Jersey this year.
An EF-0 "landspout" tornado with winds up to 70 mph had touched down at a commercial building in Mount Laurel on Saturday. It was less than a mile away from Thursday’s tornado.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
