Local leaders and residents are calling on the Department of Transportation to keep pedestrians safe by repairing the crosswalks at a highly trafficked Bath Beach intersection.
Those who walk through the intersection of Bay Parkway and 86th Street say the crosswalks are littered with "craters" that can cause major issues, especially for the elderly and those with children.
Pat Delia, who lives just down the street, says all four crosswalks at the intersection are extremely dangerous.
Assemblyman William Colton says he has been pushing for the crosswalks to be repaved for awhile. He says the DOT previously told him they inspected the area and deemed taking action was not necessary.
Colton says the latest DOT inspection was about a month ago. Officials told him they will inspect again by the end of August.
Colton wants the DOT to take immediate and complete action to fix the issue.
"They shouldn't just do a patch job," says Colton. "They should do a good job that makes sure that three weeks later, the hole doesn't reappear."
A spokesperson for the DOT says the intersection was resurfaced in 2014. They say there is a scheduled Department of Design and Construction project in the area, which is preventing them from resurfacing at the moment. Upon completion, the DOT will reevaluate the site.
