Community members came together in Babylon Friday to call attention to the treatment of migrant families and children at the border.
The event comes as the White House prepares for new immigration raids this weekend.
Organizers of the event at United Methodist Church say they are lighting candles for children held in immigration detention centers and remember the ones who they say are still suffering.
Susan Tremblay, who organized the Lights for Liberty candlelight vigil, says her mother was from the Czech Republic, but was forced to leave and go to another country.
"All they're looking for is a better life for their children and their family and that's what everybody wanted who came here," says Tremblay.
Tremblay is not alone in her opposition to the detention centers.
On Friday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Bronx) testified about what she witnesses at a border detention center.
"It is unnecessary to separate children from their families, it is unnecessary to have a policy to detain innocent women and families that have harmed no person and are legally seeking asylum in the United States of America," said Ocasio-Cortez.
News 12 spoke with the pastor of the church, who says she hopes that by hosting this event, people will be inspired to do something.
Lights for Liberty events happened across the country Friday.
