The City Parks Foundation Track and Field Championship brought in children from all over the boroughs to compete Thursday.
Around 2,000 children competed in the Olympic-sized event. All of the participants trained twice a week during the summer.
The athletes even began the day with a parade of the boroughs in step to the Olympic theme song.
"We try to motivate kids to get them interested in sports,” said Mike Silverman, the director of sports for the City Parks Foundation. “And learn a little bit about personal best, and what it's all about.”
The track and field program includes the long jump, hurdles and even the javelin in addition to running.
The program is designed to not only build confidence, but also to teach kids the ins and outs of track and field.
The City Parks Foundation Summer Track and Field program is ending, but it will have a continuation in the fall with an emphasis on cross-country.
