A former congressman who represented parts of Long Island is denying allegations of sexual abuse that date back to when he worked at a Boy Scout camp.

A lawsuit filed last week in state Supreme Court claims that former Rep. Gary Ackerman, now 76, allegedly abused a 17-year-old back in 1966, while he was a director at a camp near upstate Narrowsburg.

The suit alleges that the abuse happened while Ackerman was a 23-year-old director at the Ten Mile River Camp.

The suit says the Boy Scouts should have been aware that Ackerman was a "known predator" with the potential to harm kids.

In a statement, Ackerman's attorney tells News 12, "Mr. Ackerman is extremely upset and outraged by the filing of these complaints. This is the first notice of these allegations which occurred over 53 years ago and there is no substantiation for any of it. Mr. Ackerman denies any wrongdoing and we will be defending him rigorously."

The Boy Scouts organization told the New York Post that it has no record of any allegations against Ackerman.
