Father of 5-year-old found wandering streets faces charges

Posted: Updated:
The father of a 5-year-old boy who was found wandering the streets of the Bronx on Wednesday is now facing charges.

Police say the father, William Asamoah, is facing multiple charges including attempted abandonment of a child and attempted endangering the welfare of a child after the boy was found around 11 a.m. trying to cross Webster Avenue near East 167th Street. A woman passing by saw him by himself and rushed to get him out of the street.

Police say the boy was in a blue hoodie with gray pants. They say he wasn't able to tell officers his name or his parents' names.

Police asked the boy to try and write down his information, but couldn't do that either.

News 12 spoke with the man working in the store where surveillance was taken about the moment officers arrived.

"He was jumping here and playing with the guys," said the employee at the store.

The boy was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in good condition, according to police.

The Administration for Children's Services released a statement saying, "Our top priority is protecting the safety and well-being of all children in New York City. We are investigating this case with the NYPD."
