School leaders push for crosswalk at new charter school

Posted: Updated:

School leaders at a new charter school in the Bronx are pushing the city to make the area around the school safer.

Several intersections outside Flacs Middle School are missing crosswalks. Although some intersections have them, one has half and others have none.

School leaders say they want to improve safety around the school. The middle school's principal says crosswalks need to be enhanced and a new traffic light would keep students safe.

City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson agrees and says a plan is in the works to help.

Councilwoman Gibson says she is working with multiple city agencies to take steps in slowing down traffic while also considering the impact it could have on traffic.

Gibson applauds the school for staggering dismissals and keeping students from overflowing into heavily trafficked streets all at once.

The school's principal is pleading with the city to get more crossing guards to help students cross the streets.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation to see if they have any plans to upgrade street safety measures in the area but has not heard back.
