Report: Asst. principal failed to act on report that Abel Cedeno brought knife to school

Posted: Updated:

A report says the assistant principal of the school where Abel Cedeno fatally stabbed a student failed to act on a report that Cedeno brought a knife to school.

In 2017, 19-year-old Abel Cedeno fatally stabbed Matthew McCree inside a classroom at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation. He also stabbed student Ariane Laboy, who survived.

Cedeno was sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in prison.

A report by the Special Commissioner of Investigation for the New York City School District says that the school’s Assistant Principal Caridad Caro failed to act on a report that Cedeno previously carried a knife to school.

The report cites a voicemail from Cedeno's mother, in which she says her son threatened family members with a knife and had brought that knife to school in a backpack.

The Department of Education says it is taking action, and writes, "This was a terrible tragedy, and the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation was closed at the end of 2017-2018 school year. Ms. Caro was immediately reassigned when we were made aware of this allegation, and based on the findings of the investigation, we will start the termination process."

The DOE says safety measures have become stronger since the stabbings. They say there has been increased training for staff, including a three-part training protocol for all schools on crisis management, mental health support, stress management, bullying and proper reporting.

The assistant principal has been reassigned to a central office.
