Residents call on city to keep Bay Plaza Mall area clean

Posted: Updated:

Residents are calling on the city to take responsibility for keeping the Bay Plaza Mall area clean after they say trash has surrounded the area.

Photos at the I-95 underpass on Bartow Avenue between Edson and Baychester avenues show a lot of trash. Just down the street at 2050 Bartow Ave., more trash tossed on the sidewalk is also visible.

When News 12 stopped by, most of the trash seen in photos was cleaned up. It is unclear who is responsible for the cleanup.

The Department of Sanitation told News 12 that dirty conditions can be reported to 311 and that people need to work with the city by disposing of trash properly.

Raphael Schweizer says the city is not doing enough.

"People talk about New York City as the greatest city in the world. When you're in the Bronx, government agencies certainly don't treat it that way," said Schweizer.

Sources tell News 12 the trash was present for weeks, and Schweizer says he hopes it doesn't go back to looking the way it did.

Residents say they would like to see garbage cans added to the area.
