Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital will soon close down and be replaced by a new $41 million health complex.
According to hospital officials, when the complex is completed in 2020, the majority of impatient care and surgical services will be moved out of the city.
New York state Sen. Jamaal Bailey said he fears the move could mean less access to health care for the Mount Vernon community.
He said in a statement, "This decision could have a significant impact on wait times and resources of other nearby hospitals and could be life-threatening for patients that may require immediate care."
The complex has the backing of Mount Vernon Mayor Andre Wallace who said in a statement, "Montefiore has always been up front about changes in health care that will affect the city, and it is clear that the health of the community is their first priority in carrying out this plan."
