Snow expected to cause messy evening commute

The city is expected to be hit with winter weather during the evening commute Monday.

The National Weather Service sent out a winter advisory for possible snow, with 2 to 4 inches expected to come down later in the day.

Mayor Bill de Blasio told New Yorkers in a news conference at OEM to "expect the unexpected."

The Department of Sanitation has 705 spreaders and 1,500 plows at the ready.

 Officials say they'll head out as soon as the build-up of snow reaches two inches.

The worst of the expected storm is to happen during the evening commute.

The mayor and city officials stated residents should stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

The city also strongly recommends taking mass transit if possible.

New York City Public Schools are open today and are operating on a normal schedule. However, any after-school programs requiring student transportation by yellow school bus are canceled.
