The new year will bring a new speed limit along two Brooklyn avenues where multiple deadly crashes have occurred.

The city, along with Councilman Carlos Menchaca, decided to lower the speed limit along 3rd and Hamilton avenues from 30 mph down to 25 mph.

"More business is popping up and all these things are just coming to a head in a space that has yet to be redesigned in a generation or two," says Menchaca.

Menchaca says the change is personal for him, because he bikes to work everyday and says he simply doesn't feel safe.

Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg says the adjustments will make people safer, and "strong enforcement will help calm traffic in the burgeoning neighborhoods of Gowanus, Red Hook and Sunset Park," she says.

The DOT says along 3rd Avenue from Flatbush Avenue to Shore Road, there have been 11 fatalities between 2014 and 2019 -- six of those happened last year alone.

Officials say signage denoting the speed change should be posted Jan. 16.
