A mother and infant were pronounced dead after authorities responded to a home in Jersey City early Saturday morning.
The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office says the homicide unit is investigating the case, but the causes of death are not clear at this time.
Jersey City police responded to 33 Suburbia Court shortly before 6 a.m. for a report of a woman in need of medical attention. Officers say they found a 41-year-old woman needing assistance, along with an unresponsive baby girl.
The infant, whose age and identity are unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of and manner of death are under investigation by the medical examiner.
The woman was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, and was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday. Her cause of death is also under investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345 or to leave an anonymous tip on the prosecutor's office website.
A neighbor tells News 12 that she has been suspicious of the people living in the home.
"I've called Mayor Fulop's office and nothing happened," she says. "There's not much more I can do other than try to protect myself."
Officials have not commented on the condition of the home or if it has been previously investigated. The neighbor tells News 12 that the house is vacant with squatters living there illegally,  but that has not been confirmed at this time by authorities.
