The FBI is stepping in to help crack the 30-year-old unsolved murder case of a Suffolk County narcotics detective.
Suffolk Police Detective Dennis Wustenhoff was struck by a pipe bomb planted in the driver’s seat of his police vehicle on Feb. 15, 1999. Metal shards penetrated Wustenhoff’s body and he lived for only three more hours as doctors tried to save him.

Although police had named a person of interest, Wustenhoff's murder remains unsolved.
However, a resurgence in the investigation started after Wustenhoff’s family created a Facebook page to share their story.
In the new attempt to find the killer, Suffolk County asked the FBI for the first time to take a look at the case.
“We believe it is a good time now to have another agency look at the case from the ground up,” says Chief Gerard Gigante.
Police are also offering a $10,000 reward for information that will lead to an arrest.
The Wustenhoff family says they have hope that the killer will be brought to justice.
Anyone with info can call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
