‘These numbers are sobering’: Nassau reports 43 COVID-19-related deaths overnight
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced 43 additional deaths overnight from COVID-19, bringing the county total up to 138.
The 43 new deaths included 29 men and 14 women ranging in age between 33 and 93 years old.
"These numbers are sobering and as we have said from the beginning, we have been expecting this," said Curran.
Curran said the county is doing everything to track the pandemic.
Officials say hospitals and health care workers are stretched thin and need relief. The county is hoping a temporary facility at SUNY Old Westbury, which is slated to be up and running next week, will be turned into a facility for COVID-19 patients. In addition, health care executives are scouring for healthcare workers to volunteer.
Curran urged residents to continue to practice social distancing, saying, “You are saving lives by practicing social distancing.”
Nassau police have 101 confirmed positive cases and 172 officers in quarantine. A total of 85 officers have already returned to work.

Nassau officials said blood supplies are terribly low across the county and urged residents who can give blood to donate.
In addition, the county says it is awaiting guidance from the federal government on face covering and masks procedures.
