Tenants of a Bronx NYCHA building are calling for better cleaning efforts after a woman was reported dead due to the coronavirus.
Community activists tell News 12 that a woman named Nikki passed away over the weekend. This comes a little less than a week after News 12 was first at the complex on Watson Avenue talking to tenants about their frustrations over a lack of proper sanitation.
“Right now we have doctors dying, we have nurses dying, sacrificing their jobs for us. They're sacrificing their family to take care of these sick people that didn't need to die. We want you, especially our young people here, they are not taking this serious.. We must wear gloves, we must wear masks,” said community activist Carmen Hernandez.
The agency issued a response to News 12 that said, ”We are heartbroken to hear that we have lost a member of our NYCHA family. From day one, we implemented a protocol to sanitize all of our buildings, above and beyond health department guidance. We continue to provide our residents with essential and emergency services, and we communicate the most current information, in real-time, to all of our residents, during this rapidly changing environment."
