FDNY warns public as illegal displays of fireworks continue
The FDNY is warning the public about the dangers of fireworks as they continue to be illegally set off across the city.
FDNY Capt. Michael Kozo says the 3-year-old burned by a firework in the Bronx is a reminder of just how harmful they can be.
“Something like this should be left to professionals only for obvious reasons and on top of the fact that they are illegal,” said Kozo.
The FDNY says it typically receives a high number of calls during the summer related to fireworks.
So far this year, the NYPD says there have been more than 13,000 911 calls about illegal fireworks.
This is compared to just over 1,000 in all of last year. The vast majority of calls have been reported in the month of June.
The city has tried to curb the issue with a task force. There have already been multiple arrests in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
The NYPD intercepted a $30,000 shipment of illegal fireworks at John F. Kennedy International Airport and arrested the men suspected of smuggling the items.
The FDNY says anyone is encouraged to call 311 if they see any illegal fireworks in their neighborhood.
