Suspected MS-13 member pleads guilty to sex abuse of 2-year-old, stabbings
A suspected MS-13 gang member pleaded guilty Thursday to sexually abusing a 2-year-old girl and stabbing two women – all on the same night.
In March 2017, Tommy Alvarado-Ventura was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting and beating a 2-year-old girl and stabbing two different women in Hempstead. The Nassau police commissioner at the time called it "probably the most heinous criminal act I've ever seen."
Alvardao-Ventura pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted murder, assault and sex assault. Police have said Alvarado-Ventura is a member of MS-13 who is in the U.S. illegally and was previously deported four times.
"It also demonstrates the weakness of our border security," U.S. Rep. Peter King told News 12 Thursday from Washington, D.C.
Luis Valenzuela, of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance, says the crime is horrific but shouldn't be used to fan an anti-immigrant agenda. He says overall immigration reform, not building a wall, is the answer.
It's unclear how Alvarado-Ventura was able to re-enter the U.S. four times. A source says at least one of those times, he entered from Mexico into Texas. A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the only way to know for sure would be to interview him, but he would have to consent to that.
