THE BRONX - Council member Andrew Cohen is calling for a further investigation of Thursday's fire in Bedford Park.

Although officials say an electrical problem with an air conditioning unit started the blaze, tenants say they have reasons to believe otherwise because several complaints against the owner of the multifamily home were filed before the fire.

"I think the circumstances of having such an ugly tenant dispute and now this fire really warrant a thorough, thorough investigation," Cohen said.

Earlier this year, tenants headed to court in hopes of fixing some violations. The tenants’ attorney also claimed that the landlord had wanted the tenants out so the building could be knocked down.

The new owner of the building, To Better Days Development, said in a statement that it welcomes an investigation and that any implication of foul play is “outrageous.”

The tenants’ attorney says they plan to go back to court and refile for new damages.
