One person is recovering from serious injuries, and more than 100 others are displaced after a massive four-alarm fire tore through an apartment building overnight.

Fire officials say flames broke out just before 12:30 a.m. at a building along East 167th Street near East 168th Street while many residents were asleep. Thick smoke poured from fifth-floor windows, waking tenants and forcing them to rush outside into the frigid cold.

Firefighters arrived to find the attic engulfed in flames. The building suffered extensive damage, with multiple windows blown out.

A total of 106 residents were displaced and are currently being housed in a hotel with assistance from the American Red Cross.

Officials say those emergency resources are temporary, and displaced families may soon have to find longer-term housing solutions.
