Not all bus stops are created equal when it comes to shelter, but the NYC Department of Transportation said that 100 new bus shelters will be built at stops across the five boroughs as Wednesday’s midday rain left riders out in the cold.
Three bus routes in The Bronx will have shelters built next year:
Bx12 at Pelham Parkway and White Plains Road (SW)
Bx23 at Bruckner Boulevard and Wilkinson Avenue
Bx12 at Pelham Parkway and Stillwell Avenue (SW).
Bus riders on the Bx12 route told News 12 they have long wondered why some stops have shelters and others don’t.
Several recalled waiting in “misery” for the bus during the multiple heat waves New York City sweated through this summer. In 2024, a Transportation Alternatives study found that The Bronx is home to seven of the hottest bus stops in NYC.
Councilwoman Kristy Marmorato said in a post on social media that these stops were chosen based on city data and City Council recommendations. New Yorkers can always request a bus shelter on their bus route by filling out this form online at NYC311.
