Police say two students, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, brought a gun to Bathgate Educational Campus Tuesday in a backpack. They are both now being charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
Police say the gun was found and confiscated by school safety officers around 12:15 p.m.
The names of the two students responsible have not been released by police since they are minors. The school reportedly does not have metal detectors so it's unclear how the firearm was found in the backpack.
The New York City School Safety Coalition said that both students were arrested since they were pointing fingers at each other as to who owned the gun. They also said that one of the students currently has a gun possession charge from another arrest a few weeks ago.
The Department of Education says it is working with police to determine next steps, and that dangerous items of any kind won't be tolerated at school.
