2 firefighters hurt while battling 2-alarm fire in Highbridge

Two firefighters where injured while battling a two-alarm fire Sunday night inside of an apartment building in Highbridge.
FDNY Assistant Deputy Chief Mike Woods said one firefighter suffered serious injuries and another suffered minor injuries while fighting the flames in the top corner of a six-story apartment building.
Video showed bright orange flames and thick black smoke flying from the windows of the building located on Woodycrest Avenue between West 167th and 168th streets.
Woods said the fire started around 7 p.m. inside of an apartment on the fifth floor and firefighters discovered a lot of clutter.
It took about 100 firefighters nearly 90 minutes to get the flames under control. Woods said they were able to confine the fire to about three apartments.
Diana Yepez said she was visiting her daughter, who was emotional while standing next to her mother.
“My daughter [is] homeless right now temporarily,” Yepez said. “This building’s been there, never been a fire. She’s been living there since she’s been six years old.”
The Red Cross was on scene to assist tenants in need.
A cause of the fire was not immediately known as of Sunday night.
