Two people were injured, and seven families were displaced after a fire at an apartment building in Morris Heights.

The FDNY says the fire started inside an apartment on the top floor of 1775 Davidson Ave. before spreading to the roof.

Nearly 200 firefighters responded to the fire on 1775 Davidson Ave., Tuesday morning.

According to the FDNY, the fire started just before 9 a.m.

The FDNY says the fire started inside of an apartment on the top floor of 1775 Davidson Avenue and quickly spread to the roof.

Dozens of tenants stood on the sidewalk watching as firefighters worked to put out the fire.

FDNY says two people were injured and taken to hospitals.

The Red Cross says it is assisting seven households, including 18 adults and five children, for emergency assistance.

Tenants have been allowed back inside the building.

FDNY Deputy Chief Michele Fitzsimmons said firefighters took four minutes to respond to the scene, but hit a major roadblock.

"Hydrants were blocked by cars. We also had a lot of cars that were illegally parked on the block... this has created a real issue of our units being able to get our initial operations into effect," said Fitzsimmons.

According to the FDNY, drivers who illegally park and block fire hydrants during an emergency could face a fine of up to $5,000.
