Stop & Shop says that its store on East Sanford Boulevard in Mount Vernon has been underperforming, so it is closing.
Customers tell News12 they're shocked.
"I'm surprised, I thought they had good business here," said customer Pierre LaRoche.
"Why go? it's well stocked, they have good bargains. And it's convenient!" said customer Sharon Davis.
She shops at this store about twice a week.
"For a quick get in, get out, I come here," she said.
She says there's always a steady stream of people shopping, "Right after 5 p.m., when people come home, it's well shopped."
"A lot of people from the Bronx come here to shop," added LaRoche.
This store is one of seven stores across the state set to close by Nov. 2, and one of two in the Hudson Valley. The other store is in West Haverstraw on Samsondale Plaza.
Stop & Shop blames underperformance, but perhaps, its just a sign of the times.
"There's shops that I go to that I was so used to going to and they've closed up either because of not in demand anymore or able to get in there, mostly online," said Davis.
The store says employees at impacted locations will be offered other opportunities with the company.
In a statement, the city of Mount Vernon said it is "actively engaging with potential partners and exploring opportunities to bring a new, vibrant business to this location."
Stop & Shop says it will communicate specific store closing dates to local customers well in advance of any closure.
The other store in the Hudson Valley that will close is located at 7 Samsondale Plaza in West Haverstraw.
