A pasta mystery in New Jersey has been solved.

Neighbors, police and people on social media have been questioning who is responsible for hundreds of pounds of pasta being dumped near a stream in Veterans Park in Old Bridge after photos of the piles of pasta went viral.

Neighbors say that the estimated 500 pounds (225 kilograms) of noodles came from a stockpile at a nearby home. As the home was preparing to go on the market, the excess pasta was dumped.

The pasta was apparently raw when it was dumped, but subsequent heavy rains softened the food and made the mounds look like they had been cooked, officials have said. It's not believed the pasta had been at the site for long before it was discovered.

The Old Bridge Department of Publics Works got word of the situation and workers filled about 15 wheelbarrows and carted the pasta away.

AP wire services contributed to this report.
