The City of White Plains agreed to a $5 million settlement with the family of Kenneth Chamberlain on Monday.

Chamberlain, a retired Marine, was shot and killed by police after his medical alert necklace accidentally went off. He told police he was OK, but they forced their way inside, where they claim Chamberlain charged at them with a knife.

"Although a settlement represents the end of a litigation, our work is not done," said White Plains Mayor Tom Roach. "We are committed to continually reviewing policing policies, investing in training and new technologies as they become available, and working to maintain positive police-community relations, not forgetting these events, but working to ensure they do not happen again."

Chamberlain’s family filed a federal lawsuit following his death, which has been in appeals court twice.

"My family hopes this settlement will inspire other victims of police violence to keep fighting for the truth," said Kenneth Chamberlain Jr. in a statement.

Chamberlain Jr. added the money will go toward establishing a foundation to continue fighting for police reform, transparency and accountability.
