'New York City Reads' campaign kicks off along with first day of new school year

As students walked through the doors of their school Thursday morning, officials say they can expect to see some changes to their literacy curriculum.

In May, Mayor Adams and Chancellor Banks announced the launch of the New York City Reads Campaign that will include a phonics-based concept to help students sound out words and letters. The program is expected to help boost reading skills across the city.
The plan was made after the department of education reported over 50% of elementary school students in the city were not reading at a proficient level in school. The plan will be rolled out in two phases starting at 15 districts in 2023 and the rest by 2025.
On Thursday, Chancellor Banks announced the city is offering tenure to educators who activate their Bilingual Education Extension secondary license.
