City officials drove home the point today that on Sept. 16, all e-bike sales or rentals are required to be certified by an accredited testing lab to follow safety standards.
FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh says that this year to date, lithium-ion batteries have caused 170 fires, injured 96 New Yorkers and killed 14 residents.

“I’m working with our partners at the Consumer and Worker Protection… we have been conducting outreach to all e-bike shops and e-bike repair shops to inform them of best practices with these devices,” said Kavanagh.
