Plan to bring cricket stadium to Van Cortlandt Park scrapped

A city plan that would have brought a 30,000+ seat cricket stadium to Van Cortlandt Park is no longer on the table.
This comes after elected leaders and community members voiced their strong opposition to the plan that would have brought games for the 2024 Cricket World Cup to the Bronx.

Rep. Ritchie Torres was joined by elected officials and dozens of nearby residents earlier this month to oppose the construction of this stadium. The stadium will now be built in Nassau’s Eisenhower Park.
Torres says the city delayed announcing the plan publicly at first and did not give space for proper public discourse. Threats of legal action from multiple elected officials emerged in response to the potential stadium.
The mayor’s office provided News 12 with the following statement, in part:
“New York City put forward a competitive bid reflective of the diversity of our city and the countless immigrant communities who call it home, and we appreciate their support.”
