Sweet Catch, a Black and woman-owned restaurant, celebrated its one-year anniversary on Sept. 21.

Born and raised in the Bronx, co-owner Ka-wana Jefferson now calls Brooklyn home. She says her family's Southern roots shine the brightest inside the restaurant on Nostrand Avenue.

"I was definitely inspired by my culture, and how I was raised, the food that I was raised on. Some of the dishes on the menu are my grandmother's recipes, my aunt's recipes," Jefferson said.

From their delicious shrimp and grits with a touch of truffle oil, to their new sausage and chicken gumbo, Jefferson says the menu pays tribute to the culinary contributions and impact of African Americans throughout history.

"Sweet Catch is seafood made with soul, so of course we have a lot of items out of the sea, and then a lot of items influenced by soul food," she added.

While Jefferson says it hasn't been an easy ride, the mother of two young boys says her family and her profound love for people keep her moving forward every day.

"We wouldn't be here a year later if it wasn't for the community embracing us and coming and supporting our establishment," she said.

Sweet Catch is open every day, except on Mondays, for lunch and dinner. They also offer brunch on the weekends. You can find their full menu here.
