Canine Companions honored local heroes Wednesday at its 12th annual Veterans Day ceremony.

Five veterans from Long Island were given the Outstanding Service Award.

Canine Companions places dogs with veterans to help live independent lives.

The organization has been helping veterans since 1975 and says over 400 people are currently waiting for a dog.
