The Bronx Veteran Coalition and members of the nonprofit group Devil Dog USA Incorporated gathered in Longwood Saturday for a celebration honoring veterans in the community.

Eight veterans took center stage at the Mount Nebo Grand Lodge Community Foundation. They were honored for their service to the country and to the community.

Two veterans were recognized posthumously. Diane Anderson's brother, Master Gunnery Sgt. Edward L. Cruz was one of them.

"When he came home, he served the veterans, volunteering his services, so he always gave back, you know, and so he was a giver," Anderson said.

Merit certificates were awarded from the 79th District in front of fellow veterans and family members. Many have started nonprofits, work on causes for veterans and said it was an honor to have served. Veteran Johnny Frank Hogans said it was such a special day to be remembered.

"To receive this kind of honor and challenge and respect is just great," he said.

Organizers said they plan to hold this event again next year to continue to honor veterans in the community.
