Fire crews responded to a large building fire early Friday morning in the Allerton section of The Bronx.

Firefighters say they were dispatched to 2309 Holland Ave. at around 6 a.m. for a fire on the sixth floor of the building.

According to the fire chief on scene, 33 units with 138 firefighters were at the scene.

"Everybody was just screaming and yelling, ‘Get out! Get out!'" recalled Carole Galloway, a resident of the building.

Five people were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Four of the victims are in stable condition while one remains in critical condition.

Another resident, Pamela Pichardo, told News 12, "It happened so fast. The building was filled up with people. So, I just grabbed my stuff and left.”

Members of the Red Cross were assisting families that have been displaced by the fire. Many of the residents have already returned to their apartments, telling News 12 that they have no damage at all.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
