Busy Lynbrook intersection to get makeover

The “Five Corners” intersection in Lynbrook has been described as “congested,” “confusing” and “dangerous.”
The heavily trafficked area not far from the LIRR station is set to get a makeover.
Nassau County Legislator Bill Gaylor described the confusion and difficulty of the intersection to News 12, saying there are one-way streets, two-way streets and streets without turning arrows.
The goal of the work is to make the intersection safer and smoother for both drivers and pedestrians.
Gaylor said the work will include installation of traffic control lights with turn signals so people will have a turn arrow.
He and Lynbrook Police Chief Brian Paladino said the crosswalks will be changed.
One will be eradicated, and a couple of others will be moved over.
Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach said, “As you can see from the intersection, corners aren’t really lined up here, so the correction will be that corners will project right across from each other.”
He said the changes will make it a lot easier for people to cross the street.
Chief Paladino said over the past five years, there have been 94 accidents at the intersection, including two pedestrian fatalities.
News 12 spoke to Russ Posner, of Woodmere, who said he goes to the movie theater, located at the heart of the busy intersection, every week.
He described the intersection as “very confusing” and said, “cars are coming from all over.” Posner said he’s seen people nearly get hit which is “very scary.”
A spokesperson for Legislator Gaylor said the work is expected to begin in the spring or summer of 2025 and last six to nine months. The estimated cost, which is coming from the county’s capital plan budget, is $1.5 - $2 million.
