As Memorial Day weekend approaches, New York City beachgoers are preparing to head to the seaside with the reopening of city beaches.

Saturday, May 25 marks the beginning of the 2024 beach season. Lifeguards will be on duty from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Beaches will remain open until the season ends on Sept. 8.

The city's Parks Department reminds New Yorkers to only swim when lifeguards are on duty. If red flags are flying, that means that section of the water is closed.

The reminder comes as two swimmers drowned in rip currents last summer at two separate beaches with one being at Coney Island.

Along with the reopening of city beaches, Luna Park is celebrating its brand new go-kart attraction Friday.
