A new affordable housing development for seniors is making its mark in the Soundview neighborhood.

On Tuesday, elected officials and organizers held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the 16-story building offering 204 affordable apartments along Theriot Avenue.

The apartments are designed with amenities like walk-in showers, wheelchair accessibility and community spaces on each floor. Supportive services will also be offered for tenants on-site.

"This beautiful building is all electric. It's resilient. It's got design features that address all the accessibility issues that older New Yorkers have,” said JASA CEO Kathryn Haslanger. “As we age, it gets a little harder to move around. It gets a little harder to do the day to day things and everything in this building the doorknobs, the showers, the laundries, everything was designed with that in mind."

The project was named after Justice Sotomayor's mother, Celina Baez.

Organizers say 63 of the units will be set aside for formerly homeless older adults.
