Morris Park community demands end to gun violence following death of 29-year-old man

The Morris Park community is calling for change after another act of gun violence killed a 29-year-old man over the weekend.
Police say 29-year-old Kelvin Sims was shot Sunday evening on Sacket Avenue and Williamsbridge Road.
Members of the Morris Park community, clergy and officers from the 49th Precinct held a rally at that intersection to demand the violence to stop.
"The pain of the family is so strong," said Iris Berroa, aunt of Sims. "We just want this to be solved, and for there to be justice."
According to the NYPD, Sims died in the hospital after being shot in his head and chest. It's unclear what led up to his death, but police are searching for two men who may be connected to the fatal shooting.
Crime statistics show that Sims' death marks the third in the 49th Precinct this year. There were five in total in 2023.
"Right here was a location that's never been on the radar, it's very tragic," said state senator Nathalia Fernandez. "It's scary, and another sign that gun violence is still prevalent and hitting every part of our neighborhoods."
Loved ones of the victim say Sims had been living in the neighborhood for around 10 years.
