Family and friends gathered to honor the life and legacy of Detective Miosotis Familia who was fatally shot while working an overnight shift in the borough seven years ago.

She was killed on July 5, 2017, and left behind three children.

“Shot in the head for no reason, only about an hour into her shift” said her eldest daughter, Genesis Villella.

Villella was only 20 years old at the time and had to adopt her 12-year-old twin siblings.

“A mom, a dad, and a big sister - all in one.” said Villella. "Unfortunately, my mom had to miss really important milestones, like when I enrolled Peter and Deliiah in high school.”

Villella says being a police officer was more than a job for her mom.

"This was her calling, This is why she was put here on this Earth...She lived and she breathed the NYPD and this family as much as she lived for us.” said Villella.

Detective Familia's family is still fighting seven years later to get access to a pension she would have enjoyed had she been alive today.

Villella also created a scholarship in her mother's honor, awarded to students who demonstrate a passion in pursuing a career in law enforcement, and also exhibit the qualities of a future exemplary NYPD police officer.
